Description:
The workshop is designed to provides a hands-on introduction to DNA extraction and purification techniques and enables students to gain real life experience and practical knowledge of DNA. Students gain a sense of ownership and are more enthusiastic when they use their own DNA. A cost effective, simple protocol for DNA extraction and visualization was devised.
Topics that will be covered:
The intensive workshop is specifically designed to address
• Introduction for DNA extraction methods
• Measurement of DNA concentration and purity.
• Trouble shooting for each step of DNA Extraction protocol.
• Optimum condition of DNA extraction from different sample types including (blood, serum ,plasma, tissue, culture cells and forensic samples), DNA storage and stability.
Duration: 4 working days (3 hours/day).
Course structure: The course will constitute theoretical classes, demonstration and hand training.
Workshop Agenda:
1st day: Introduction to different DNA extraction methods; DNA extraction using Spin column protocol and phenol-ethanol precipitation method
2nd day: DNA extraction using magnetic separation technology.
3rd day: Measurement of extracted DNA concentration and purity using ultra-violet spectrophotometric method.
4th day: Visualization of DNA by agarose gel electrophoresis.
